I will get straight to the point: Xiaomi Mi 9T will surprise you. But then it really should not. Xiaomi has a history of producing best in class smartphone cameras as not too long ago, POCO phone made by Xiaomi bested a competitive field of extremely capable smartphone cameras in a blind camera test conducted by MKBHD (YouTube). The results were based on votes cast by people like me and you: the average user. Video of this test can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5-bo8a4zU0
Xiaomi has been making steady, strong strides in the smartphone world and has established itself as one of the android powerhouses selling millions of devices. Year on year the quality of their devices have gone up. With Xiaomi 9T they have produced a master class which although specs may suggest is a mid ranger; is not built like one. I will not get into detail of how well built it is, what materials are used, how good the screen and the back is, How you notice subtle touches in the UI that tell you how much work has gone into creating a complete package. That demands a completely separate post.
The Camera
Xiaomi Mi 9T has 4 cameras. 3 on the back and one tucked in pop up selfie camera. Right in the middle of the array is the star of the show flanked by 2 extremely capable and strong side acts. The star of the show is a 48MP snapper (f/1.75 26mm lens) with a 1/2" sesnor. A sensor that size allows for more light to be captured and light as any photographer would tell you is a photographers best friend. Right below this giagntic (in terms of phones) sensor sits a 13MP ultra wide lens (f/2.4 15mm) & on top you will find a separated red ring adorned 8MP lens (f/2.4 52mm) for 2x optical zoom.
Real World Night Time Test Drive
I recently got a chance to take Mi 9t for a test ride and that too at night. Straight out: What's the verdit? Boy did it surprise & make me smile? I am an average person with normal demands. I don't care much about how true to life an image is, or if the noise reduction took out them fine details. If it looks good, I am on board. I also do not have unreal expectations from what a camera in a smartphone can or cannot do.
The images at night from mi 9T not just look good; They look really good! Yes there is noise (a lot of it in few pictures) but then you have to remember: a DSLR that would cost Rs.58,000 (as much as this phone) would do much worse in light situations this phone owned. That DSLR only does one thing: takes photos and this phone does much more than just take really good night time shots. Majority of users these days click and share on social media. Almost all of us view what is being shared on our devices. These pictures on screen as small as the ones we use on daily basis look exceedingly good.
In my opinion Xiaomi has done a stellar job with the camera setup of Mi 9T. All 3 cameras (main, telephoto & ultra-wide) held their own in tough lighting conditions. Yes, they could have produced better results & there is no denying that. However; for the price point, this phone gives you more options, versatility and flexibility than few flagship devices do not (ultra-wide missing on... venture a guess?). Is it an iPhone 11 pro max? It is not and neither it is trying to be. It is what it is: Xiaomi 9T and it is really good!
