Xiaomi launches the Mi Watch

With budget friendly fitness bands to Amazfit watches, Xiaomi is no stranger to the world of wearable. Their latest offering, the Mi Watch is the first Mi branded smartwatch by the company. This watch is meant to be a direct competitor to more established brands like Apple, Samsung & Fitbit. Xiaomi has been dubbed the apple of China and it does not come as a surprise that their watch design draws heavy inspiration from the smartwatch to rule them all: the apple watch. So much so that many reviewers are calling it an apple watch clone. No matter where it draws inspiration from, Mi watch has to slug it out against a tough, well established and well dug in competition.

So what does Mi Watch bring?

  • 1.78-inch AMOLED screen with always-on capabilities.
  • 44mm casing - Aluminum frame for $185 or Rs. 29600
  • Premium edition with sapphire crystal screen & stainless steel frame for a wallet busting $285 or Rs. 45600
  • Ceramic back in both versions
  • Touch screen, single button and crown (on the right side) combo for OS navigation & interaction
  • Single speaker & microphone on the left side to make calls, dictate message replies, listen to music
  • eSIM support: With networks in Pakistan supporting this feature; this watch can replace your phone
  • Mi watch app store backed by 40 popular apps from the get go
  • Complete fitness suite
  • Heart rate monitor

Mi watch will be running MIUI watch built on top of Wear OS.  Mi watch comes with a 570 mAh cell. The watch will be powered Snapdragon Wear 3100 4G chipset, 1 GB RAM and 8GB storage. Similar package has already been seen in latest wear OS watches before.

Besides facing a tough challenge from already established brands, Mi watch has to solve the wear OS puzzle. Wear OS despite being a wearable OS  (as the name implies) is clearly not optimized and seems to need more computing power, more RAM and more battery. Wear OS is notoriously laggy, a battery hog and one of the main reasons why android based wearable have not kicked on. Xiaomi has given their watch the latest and greatest from Snapdragon and the biggest battery ever in a smartwatch. They are also flavoring wear OS with MIUI watch. This should be e
nough to handle Wear OS issues. Remains to be seen!

There are no details on a Pakistan launch yet. As soon we get a wind of it, Techrisala will be one of the first ones to bring you the news!
